As a freelancer working from home, you have the flexibility to work whenever and
wherever you want – which can be both a blessing and a curse. If you’re not self-
motivated, it can be easy to procrastinate and get distracted from important
projects, leading to missed deadlines and dissatisfied clients. However, it’s possible
to become a better self-motivator and develop techniques that keep you on track
with your projects.
Some of the key things to focus on are keeping a dedicated workspace, creating a
personal work routine, and making sure to take regular breaks throughout the day.
These practices can help to make it easier to separate your work from your daily
life, giving you a sense of mental clarity when you’re finished with a project. You can
also try out productivity apps such as Pomodoro, which will help you to focus and
eliminate distractions.
Another important aspect is to be able to recognize and celebrate your
achievements, particularly when working from home. This can be difficult without
coworkers, but you may be able to join or form a group of like-minded freelancers
that meet up regularly and collaborate on projects together. You can also try
tracking your progress with tools such as Kanban boards or even a simple
spreadsheet, which helps you visualize your goals and see how close you are to
them.
Taking frequent, short breaks can help to improve your productivity and boost
motivation while you’re working from home. You can use this time to relax, do
something physical, or simply close your eyes for a few minutes. Taking a break
throughout the day will also help to prevent you from getting burnt out, so it’s a
good idea to incorporate them into your schedule.
If you find that your motivation is lacking, it can be helpful to remember what
initially drew you to freelancing in the first place. Recalling this reason can reignite
your passion and give you the motivation you need to complete those tasks that feel
tedious or overwhelming.
Many people who work from home find that they have a hard time separating their
work life from their home life, which can affect their motivation levels. One way to
combat this problem is to try out a coworking space, where you can interact with
other people and have a more professional environment.
Lastly, try to stay as positive as you can about your work, and don’t let any
negativity creep into your mindset. Remind yourself why you’re doing this in the first
place, and what you’ll be gaining by reaching your goal (such as having more
freedom in your life, or being able to afford to buy a new car or home). This will help
you stay motivated even when the going gets tough. You can also use visualization
to help, by imagining what it will be like when you’re a successful freelancer and
you’re rejecting proposals from less-qualified clients. This will motivate you to work
harder towards your goal.
